Dispatches from Rezoning for Housing: Day 3
Inspiring speakers continue, as do sometimes odd councillor questions.
from Willem Klumpenhouwer
Good morning!
As I sit down at my desk and boot up the live stream for the fourth day of the public hearing (likely a shorter day as Council will in some way have to make way for Calgary Planning Commission to meet as the work of the city must continue), I can’t help but reflect on just how much of a political football this relatively banal zoning change has become.
As a very on-the-nose example, look no further than this exchange between Councillor McLean and Brian Thiessen yesterday, this after several other councillors had asked pointed questions from Mr. Thiessen. These questions were not really about land use (the matter before them), but instead seemed to be setting him up for a sound-bite.
For what it’s worth, Mr. Thiessen is a lawyer and this does not appear to be his first rodeo.
Finally, here’s the recap video from Day 3 of the public hearing, courtesy of Unsprawling on YouTube. Please consider liking and subscribing, and thanks to all the folks who took time after an already long day to chat about what they saw!
As a reminder, you can still sign up to speak until the hearing closes. We encourage you to do so!
